Discover the Art of Ceramic Instrument Making

Join us for an in-person workshop where you'll learn to handcraft your own ceramic instrument using ancestral techniques rooted in Mesoamerican traditions. Guided by artist and musician Vianney López, this immersive experience blends earth, sound, and creativity—no prior clay or music experience needed. Held in her personal studio sanctuary in Philadelphia, this intimate gathering weaves ancestral knowledge and expansion of creativity to further explore our visions. The journey culminates in the creation of a one-of-a-kind instrument and a deepened connection to the sacred artistry of sound.

Workshop Offerings

𖠷 Ocarina
In this 3-hour introductory workshop, you’ll be guided through the process of shaping your own clay ocarina — a small wind instrument born from breath and earth. You’ll learn the basics of hand-building and how sound is created within clay forms. Each participant will design and sculpt their own unique ocarina, adding personal textures or symbols. Your finished piece will be carefully dried and fired after class, ready to continue its journey home to you. All materials and firing are included.

𖠷 Flute
In this 3-hour introductory workshop, you’ll be guided through the art of shaping a simple clay flute—an instrument that carries the voice of the wind. You’ll learn how to form, hollow, and refine your flute while exploring the basics of sound, airflow, and tone creation. Each participant will also have the opportunity to design their piece with personal carvings or symbolic details. All materials are provided, and your flute will be carefully dried and fired after the workshop, ready for pickup or shipping once complete. No prior experience is needed.
